Questions To Ask When Renting Heavy Equipment

Nevaeh Graves

Renting heavy equipment can be a great way to get projects done without spending too much for machines you don't use all the time. However, if you aren't familiar with the heavy equipment rental process, you may not know what kind of questions to ask a rental company before getting the necessary machines onto your work site. Here are some questions that can make your job easier.

What is the Maximum Load Limit of Your Machines?

If you are renting a bucket truck, wheel loader or forklift, it is natural to assume that you can lift and carry any load with any machine. In fact, that is not the case. There are load limits for each machine you may rent. The rental company should be able to tell you the lift capabilities of any machine, so that you can choose the right one for your particular project without worrying that that you're exceeding load limits.

Am I Responsible for Fuel?

Different rental companies have different rules about whether they fuel a machine before dropping it off on your site or whether you are responsible for fueling the machine yourself. If you're responsible for fuel, that can add extra costs that you need to know about.

If you are responsible for fuel, be sure that you know the manufacturer and model of the machine you'll be using, so that you can investigate and determine what kind of fuel you should be buying.

Do I Need to Clean the Machine?

You may assume that after you use heavy equipment, you simply have to return it to the rental company. However, some companies charge you a fee if you don't properly clean the machine before returning it to them. Ask beforehand, so you can put aside some time to make sure that the equipment you rent is returned in good condition.

What are Late Fees Like?

You can't always stick to the schedule you set for yourself, so if you need an excavator or a forklift for a longer period of time, it's preferable to keep the equipment on site until the job is done. However, many rental companies will charge you fees for keeping the equipment longer than expected. These fees vary, so consult a few different rental companies to get an idea of how much you may have to spend if you keep equipment later than expected.

Asking these questions before you rent heavy equipment will help you make solid choices. Talk to the rental company to find out more information about renting the right machines for your projects. To learn more, contact a company like Sound Equipment Rentals & Sales.

About Me
Making the Best of Heavy Construction Equipment in the Area

Hiya! My name is Mitch Flanders. I work in construction where I have the great pleasure of running heavy equipment. I love my work, but I know for fact that those who live and work in the areas where I’m working don’t love me so much. I do have empathy for those folks. After all, my heavy equipment is noisy. When people complain, and they do, I try to help give them some suggestions on how to deal with the noise and mess us construction crews make. I always suggest that they get creative and make the best out of the disturbances. They can create betting games out of how many hours a day or week we are going to be disturbing them. Make it fun among the family or co-workers. I’m going to share more with you here, and hope you find it of interest.
